Weeks 4,5 and 6 sketch up movies.

I had a lot of trouble with converting my sketch up model to cry engine. I decided to make a video of just my sketchup models without the cry engine software as I feel my drawings show what the overall atmosphere would be like to the viewer.

Final lightbox installation building:

Week 4 bar building:

Audio and video from week 4 project.

This quick video shows the atmosphere from inside the bar as more people arrive.

Material adaptation from week three.

For my week three project depicting the season of change I used a tree as my central object. The material adaptation is changing a usually non see through material (paper) and adding a semi transparancy by cutting out shapes and shinning a light through. This changes the material properties and allowed me to experiment with different ways to show the tree. This idea was carried on from my sculpture and model drawings from the first week assignment and allowed me to draw with light.

Second attempt at sketch up.

For catch up on last weeks project I did another very rough model of the bar I designed. This just shows the outside perspective next to the other boat sheds and shows the proper size in relation to the pre existing sheds.

Initial sketch up attempt.

After putting off using sketchup for the first few weeks of the project I wanted to start with the basic outside design of the light installation. Through this sketchup attempt it is easier to see the building in context with the existing boat sheds around it.

Final Sketches.

Final section view:

In this image I am trying to capture the tranquil environment of the waterfront and the boat sheds. I have used a basic screenshot from sketch up and used textures through photoshop.

Final plan view:

For my final plan view I am attempting to exaggerate the textures and rough look of the concrete that runs around the boat sheds teamed with the trees that surround the upstairs walkway. I have used a range of textures including rough pencil etches. The circle on the left hand side shows a close up view of the light box and its surface. It is made out of a matt black coloured shell so it does not reflect any of the light off its surface.

First final perspective:

For this perspective I have tried to show weather that occurs regularly at the site which includes high winds at some times. I have attempted this by using a grainy texture for the background that implies movement.

Final elevation.

This elevation image shows the high volume of foot traffic that occurs on a bright sunny day as portrayed in this image. This foot traffic is necessary to attract people into the exhibition. I have also incorporated brighter colours and a clear sky to imply warmth which would draw people to the attraction.

Drawing showing the different perspective throughout my finals:

This image is more of an abstract interpretation of the exhibition and was inspired by the circular shapes found in the physical light box. Nicky Foreman was my inspiration as the artist model because of her layered use of different shapes.

Final perspective drawing:

My final perspective drawing shows the site in a more wintery scene to show the 'warm' atmosphere the  light installation gives off with its natural tones. A rod can be seen to be holding the light box to the wall. This rod also controls the rotation of the light box.

Individual Light Box design.

Close up views of the inside detail of the light box and on each panel. Shows a lot of cut out shapes that allow the light to pass through and cast the corresponding cutouts onto the wall.

Short video showing the importance of light.

This is a short, basic video showing how the light adds warmth and atmosphere to the installation and the importance of it to create an experience for the viewer. For this I took a screen video of the opacity change as I added and took light away from the image.

Selected Drawings Weeks 5 and 6.

First initial plan view of the light meets dark installation. I need to experiment more with how the light reflects off the mirrors under the light box to show more of the overall atmosphere in the area. I also need to start experimenting with colour reflection in the next drawing.

The front view of the building is a simple design with an open plan bottom level that allows in a lot of natural light. The two levels are so that no natural light can get into the upstairs installation. The front window is a dark reflective window to also keep natural light out.

This perspective view shows the different light features in the installation. The bottom floor has open panels that allow natural light in while the upstairs allows no natural light in. I have moved the mirrors in the installation to the sides so that they can pick up a wider angle of light.

Inside perspective view of the light box art installation. The overall look gives the impression of opulence.

Although these are my first initial selected drawings, I have noticed I need to add more of an atmosphere to show off the overall 'feeling' the viewer would experience while at the installation. All of these use the same background textures and ideas and only shows a very one dimensional view and perspective.

I chose to do a two storied structure because the light installation needs to be completely dark and i wanted to utilize the outside view in some way. This quick image shows an idea of the view from the inside of the first floor. This allows the viewer to get an ocean view while they are waiting to go into the installation.

Week 5 and 6 final project.

Meeting: Light meets Dark.

-Absence and presence of light.
-Positive and negative light.
-Harsh transition in between…….Quick 'meeting'.
-Transparent and semi transparent.
-Idea for the art installation could be a rotating, ever changing, semi transparent shape that has cut outs that the light shines through.
-For a more interactive aspect the room could be filled with mirrors that people can move to change the direction of the light……for parents and children etc.
Why the boat sheds and water front?
-Could generate a lot of foot traffic and people stopping by for a look as people walking along the sea area are normally out for a ''sunday stroll'' and have spare time to enjoy an art installation.
-Needs a waiting area for people about to go inside so they don't loose interest and leave.
-Also this area can have a lot of sun light which could be used to make the installation run. For example an open space in the roof that allows natural light in to pass through the installation.

Inspiration for art installation:

Using a dark room with thin amount of white light makes the installation stand out a lot better then a room that allows natural light in. The use of angles is done  in a simplistic but interesting way and the use of mirrors could also utilize the angles even more.

The use of mirrors and semi transparent glass make the installation stand out but in a way that complements the environment around it using the reflection. The light is used in a very interesting way that could be adapted to suit my meeting of light meets dark.

The overall look of this installation is beautiful and is done in such a simple way. Making the cube orate off different mirrors and using different colored lights could make it more interactive by making the audience able to control them in a simple way.

The installation idea could be adapted to show the roller turning in a timed way that projects shapes like a story onto the wall. I like the use of a semi transparent material as it makes that shapes look less harsh.

This simple cut out design make the light the main feature as it passes through the shapes and onto the simple white floor which acts like a canvas.

The different mirror create an amazing effect that manages to blend into the background as it enhances different aspects. A set up of mirrors could reflect the different angles of light in an interesting way. Could develop this idea more.

The gap in the ceiling make that natural light the focus and it would also change with the different times of day. I could incorporate this idea into the downstairs level of the installation.

Quick sketch ideas:

The light source come from above and shines through onto a mirror sphere that projects the light. Directly under the light box is a circle of mirror with could that add another interesting element and reflects that images with colour.

Outdoor exterior inspiration :

Mirrors or semi reflective exterior would exaggerate the surrounding environment.

This is an interesting layout because it allows a lot of room for natural light to go into the structure.
